Naidu: fight for transparency in elections will continue

Stating that he respected the Supreme Court judgment on the petition filed by 21 political parties seeking verification of 50% of the VVPAT slips, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Saturday that the fight for transparency in the election process would continue, and reiterated that the EVMs were prone to manipulations.
Participating in a consultation on ‘Strengthening transparency, accountability and independence of the Election Commission and the electoral process’ in New Delhi, Mr. Naidu said advanced countries such as Singapore did not use the EVMs in their electoral processes. They, instead, opted for the paper ballots.
The VVPATs could be counted on the same number of tables (14) being used by the EVMs and in the presence of counting agents and observers to ensure that the counting took place in a fair and transparent manner, he said, referring to the Election Commission’s contention that the demand for counting 50% VVPATs would delay the result by at least six days.
