Centre prohibits UP, Bihar from throwing dead bodies in Ganga, asks for safe & dignified funeral

  • The central government today directed UP and Bihar to ban the throwing of dead bodies in the Ganges and its tributaries.
  • The court insisted on their safe and dignified funeral. This instruction has been given at a time when many bodies were found floating in these rivers.
  • In a review meeting held on 15-16th May, the Centre said that recently there have been many cases of dead bodies, partially burnt and mutilated bodies, which is highly inappropriate.
  • The Ministry of Waterpower said that Namami Gange instructs the states to ban the flow of dead bodies in the Ganges and emphasize their safe disposal.
  • State pollution control boards have been directed to monitor water quality repeatedly in collaboration with health departments.
