A total of 13 workers lost their lives in the last two years while cleaning underground sewers in Gujarat.
Despite several representations by activists, the state govt has not increased the death compensation from the fixed Rs 3 lakh.
Justice & empowerment minister Ishwar Parmar said, "In case of death of sanitation workers, the family of the deceased person gets Rs 1 lakh insurance compensation."
He further said, "In addition, Rs 2 lakh compensation is given by the Safai Kamdar Vikas Nigam Ltd."
To this MLA Jignesh Mevani replies that it is a shame that the minister accepts on record that the value of a sanitation worker’s life is worth just Rs 3 lakh.
