13 died cleaning sewers in 2 years in state

  • A total of 13 workers lost their lives in the last two years while cleaning underground sewers in Gujarat.

  • Despite several representations by activists, the state govt has not increased the death compensation from the fixed Rs 3 lakh.

  • Justice & empowerment minister Ishwar Parmar said, "In case of death of sanitation workers, the family of the deceased person gets Rs 1 lakh insurance compensation."

  • He further said, "In addition, Rs 2 lakh compensation is given by the Safai Kamdar Vikas Nigam Ltd."

  • To this MLA Jignesh Mevani replies that it is a shame that the minister accepts on record that the value of a sanitation worker’s life is worth just Rs 3 lakh.
