GAC to challenge CLP merger into BJP in SC

A group of around 20 individuals, cutting across party lines have united under the banner of Goem Against Corruption (GAC), will knock on the doors of the Supreme Court to challenge the merger of 2/3 of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) with the legislative wing of the BJP. The group includes social activists, lawyers, teachers and politicians.
According to North Goa-based social activist and GAC spokesperson Cecille Rodrigues, "We are challenging the interpretation of the Anti Defection Act before the apex court. The way the Anti-Defection Act is interpreted by the ruling party in various States is constitutionally incorrect. This was never the intention and spirit of the Anti-Defection Act," Rodrigues explained, refusing to share further information at this stage.
“Goans with different political affiliations including some from the ruling BJP party have joined the GAC,” Rodrigues said. “Several hundred BJP workers across Goa are unhappy with the latest development. Today, they have to bow before the very people they campaigned against, while their own leaders, who have been with the party for nearly 20-25 years, are confined to the corner," claims Adv Austin Rebello from Velim, one of the petitioners.  Rebello said political workers from the BJP, Congress, MGP, GSM, Shiv Sena and the Goa Forward Party have come together under the Goem Against Corruption banner to fight this "buying" and "inducement" of MLAs in the State.
