CRZ violations to come under scrutiny

Minister for Environment Nilesh Cabral on Thursday informed the state legislative assembly that the government will soon empanel private agencies to conduct primary assessment of the complaints received as regards violations related to the coastal regulation zone in Goa.
“Once these agencies submit their reports, the officers of the department of science, technology and environment will visit the sites of the violations and record the same,” he added.
Earlier, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, speaking during the question hour, pointed out that 35 orders of demolition have been issued since 2015 towards the CRZ violations.
“However, in majority of these cases no action has been taken, with the government still awaiting compliance report,”  he added, pointing out that if these orders are not taken to their logical end then there would be no rationale behind issuance of such orders. Cabral maintained that many of the CRZ violators approach the National Green Tribunal, the High Court or the Supreme Court and obtain a stay order against the demolition orders.
