Gujarat lawyers' body to move Supreme Court over Centre blocking Justice Kureshi promotion

The Gujarat High Court Advocates Association is likely to move the Supreme Court regarding the Central government's refusal to clear the elevation of Justice Akil Kureshi as  Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Kureshi is the senior-most judge of the Gujarat High Court and is currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court after his transfer in November last year.

The delegation of lawyers had also tried to meet the law minister over the Centre's decision to reject the recommendation of the collegium. The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the elevation of Justice Akil Kureshi as chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in May. However, the Narendra Modi government appointed Justice Ravi Shankar Jha as the acting chief justice of the high court, while keeping the collegium’s recommendation pending.
The Gujarat High Court Bar had alleged that Justice Kureshi had been transferred from the Gujarat High Court as the Modi government disapproved of him. Between 2010 and 2011 Justice Kureshi had delivered two major verdicts in the high court in cases relating to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
