South Goa is one of the two Lok Sabha constituencies in the coastal state of Goa. South Goa was formerly known as Mormugao Lok Sabha constituency. The polls here were conducted in the third phase of 2019 general elections on April 23. The constituency elected Narendra Sawaikar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 general elections. This Lok Sabha election, Sawaikar of the BJP contested against former Chief Minister Cosme Francisco Caitano Sardinha of the Congress, Elvis Gomes of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Rakhi Amit Naik of the Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena which has forged an alliance with the BJP in Maharashtra contested independently in Goa.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sawaikar defeated Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco of the Congress with a margin of 32,330 votes. In 2009, Sawaikar was defeated by the Congress’ Sardinha.
The Catholic-dominated South Goa constituency
has traditionally been a Congress bastion. Eduardo Faleiro of the party has been elected to five times. Sardinha of the Congress was elected three times.
The BJP has won the seat of South Goa only twice -- in 1999 when Ramakant Angle was elected and then in 2014 when Sawaikar won the seat.
