A delegation of political parties from Manipur led by chief minister N Biren Singh called on Union home minister Rajnath Singh Thursday and also submitted a memorandum. The delegation briefed the Union home minister on the prevailing chaotic situation in Manipur and other Northeast states due to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The delegation urged the Union minister to look into the matter of insertion of a clause exempting Manipur in particular and other Northeast states in general from the purview of the Bill.

In the memorandum, the delegation welcomed the clarification issued by the Union home ministry on taking prior consent of the concerned state before granting citizenship to a migrant. However, it would be appropriate and add strength to the clarification if a separate safeguard or exception clause ‘for the protection of indigenous people of Northeast is incorporated in the current bill, it added.
