The Victims of Hindutva Terror
India’s colour from a secular nation is changing to a more violent and intolerant one. No doubt, the rising vehemence among the communities, parties and other socio-cultural-political groups have gone up in the recent past. No matter how much we debate on 'how secular our country is', the current situation is quite evident from the rising "Hindu nationalistic approach" across the country. The cases of mob lynching, communal clashes, gunning down of the rationalist, killing of journalists and attack on caste groups etc. are no new occurrences which make it to news stories daily.
Hindutva Terror: Lives Taken by Guns
The right-wing groups not only started attacking the minorities rigorously but also rationalists, journalists, and freethinkers also add up to their hater’s list. The frequency of the death threats, hate speeches thrown by various right-wing leaders, encounters explain the narrative fairly. The murders of Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist, Narendra Achyut Dabholkar, an Indian medical doctor, rationalist and author from Maharashtra, MM Kalburgi, an Indian scholar of Vachana sahitya (Vachana literature) as well as an academic who served as the vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi and a progressive voice among Lingayat, a caste group dominating Karnataka state politics, and Govind Pansare, a left-wing Indian politician of the Communist Party of India (CPI) aren’t just incidental. They were paid off by the right-wing offshoots for raising the concerns and telling the truth about the extremism and threats out loud to the world.
These are some of the prominent personalities who had to give their life before Hindutva terror in the so-called secular country.
Cow Vigilantism; Minorities being the Targets
In the name of cow protection, the attacks on Muslims have gone up in the last couple of years across the country. This has resulted in the death of many Muslims but failed to arouse disgust in the larger political class. Even attacks on mosques, or the killing of an Imam while he was sleeping, also fail to move the police or the political class. Attacks on Christians in the name of opposing conversion has also now stopped to make the news. It is a tiny minority and shrinking into its shell. Various such attacks on minorities are carried out by activists belonging to outfits like the Bharatiya Gau Raksha Dal (BGRD) and its regional units as well as organizations like the Bajrang Dal and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) that are part of the Sangh Parivar, a family of Hindu right-wing organizations of which the BJP is a part.
The general public doesn’t seem to have got the idea behind the promises to make India a Hindu nationalist country by the political leaders to buy the votes. Even in many states, the political leaders are still spewing venom of hatred among the communities and people. Neither national nor state leaders condemning this deadly act of bigotry. Instead of warning these right-wing outfits which threaten other communities, they’re being supported by the political outfits indirectly. If the voices of truth bearers aren’t heard over the noise of conservatives, the idea of democracy is putrefying!
