Why do you think 'virginity' is the “only” thing
to be cared about till a girl gets married? The notion of safeguarding or protecting virginity has been imposed on the parents as well as on the girls since they’re born.
Why even talking about sex and sexuality a great taboo in India?
There was a time when the girls used to be forced to undergo a "virginity test" on their wedding night in order to ascertain whether or not she was "virtuous". The test is seen as an integral part of any wedding conducted within the community. Still, in some parts of the country, the highly influential panchayat (local village council) enforces this test and decides the character of a woman.
The couple is given a white sheet and taken to a hotel room rented by the village council or one of the families. They are expected to consummate the marriage while the two families and council members wait outside. If the bride bleeds during intercourse she is seen as a virgin, and if she does not, the consequences can be severe.
As reported by BBC, a movement to stop newly-wed brides from a nomadic tribal community having to take a virginity test has begun in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, and campaigners are determined to put an end to the "humiliating" practice.
To an utter shock, grooms are even allowed to annul their marriages if their wives have not "proven" their purity. Not just this, the women in question are publicly humiliated and beaten by family members because of the "shame" they have caused. This continues despite many experts having debunked the theory that a woman always bleeds the first time she has intercourse.
Why have the girls been told since their childhood that virginity is higher than their self-respect? The attitude towards women in India
must change as they should get what they actually deserve.
If a girl has to go through a test which proves her ‘purity’, why not for a man? If ‘virtue’ is the priority, that applies to them as well. Right? The concept of a girl being an inferior gender is one of the reasons why toxic actions are being carried out by the society in the name of sheer asininity. Rather than spending time and energy on ridiculous issues like virginity test, society must focus on dealing with the issues of infant mortality
and malnutrition which is killing our future generation.
Educating the society that virginity test is not the serious thing in the universe to talk about is really the need of the hour.
