Concern over increasing pollution in crematoriums, the High Court says, 'look at modern methods of funerals'
The Bombay High Court held that in view of the current status of Covid-19 and the increase in the number of deaths, body authorities should explore the possibility of modern cremation techniques to reduce pollution.
The bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutt and Justice GS Kulkarni made this remark during the hearing on the PIL of Pune resident Vikrant Latkar.
The petition raised concerns over air pollution in areas near the crematoriums. Latkar's lawyer Aseem Sarode told the court that more than 80 bodies are currently cremated daily in some cremation grounds in Pune.
He said that this causes a lot of pollution in the surrounding area. The petition states that the chimney of many crematoriums has not been constructed following standard design.
The bench directed advocate Abhijeet Kulkarni, appearing for Pune Municipal Corporation, to file an affidavit in response to the petition.
