West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee can still become CM even after losing in Nandigram

  • Responding to the BJP's aggressive campaign, Mamata Banerjee returned her party TMC to power for the third consecutive time in the West Bengal assembly elections.
  • But, she lost her seat in Nandigram. BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari surprised everyone by defeating her. The TMC supporters are undoubtedly disappointed by Mamata's defeat.
  • Suvendu retained the lead against Mamata in the prestigious Nandigram seat from the beginning and won by a narrow margin.
  • According to the constitutional system, even after losing her seat and not being a member of the Legislative Assembly, she can become CM.
  • There have been some such CMs who were not members of the Legislative Assembly of their state when they became CMs. Nitish Kumar of Bihar has not contested the assembly elections for more than three decades.
