Ahmedabad must take lead in stopping plastic use

Women of Ahmedabad should take a lead in stopping the use of plastic carry bags for daily shopping, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday in the city. He termed plastic as the biggest obstacle in making the country clean.
"When you go for daily shopping for vegetables, you get them in plastic bags. But these bags do not allow water to percolate in the ground. I suggest you use cotton, khadi or jute bags instead. You may look old fashioned, but that should not be a cause of concern. These are long-lasting as well. I appeal to all the women of Gujarat to stop using plastic bags. If you are able to do this, it will herald a great change. I urge women of Ahmedabad to take this initiative," Shah said while delivering a lecture during a function to roll out electric buses in the city.
