Congress relieved as all ‘rebel’ leaders withdraw from Kundagol byelection fray

In a relief to Congress leaders, all “rebels” in the fray in the byelection to the Assembly from Kundagol constituency withdrew their nomination papers on Thursday.
The displeasure over the candidature of Kusumavati Shivalli, wife of the former Minister late C.S. Shivalli, had resulted in several aspirants for the Congress ticket filing their nomination papers.
Congress rebels Shivanand Bentur, Chandrashekhar Juttal, H.L. Nadaf, Vishwanath Kubihal, Suresh Savanur, and J.D. Ghorpade had filed their nomination papers. And to add to their worries, Hazarat Ali Jodamani, who had contested as the Janata Dal(Secular) candidate in the previous Assembly election, too had filed his nomination paper as an Independent. This was a particular concern for Congress leaders because in the previous election, Shivalli’s margin of victory was just 634 votes.
As a result, Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan and president of the Dharwad Rural District Congress unit president Anil Kumar Patil were forced to pacify the rebels at any cost.
