Annul polls in Anantapur: CPI

CPI candidate from Anantapur parliamentary constituency D. Jagadeesh on Saturday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to annul the election suo motu, taking into consideration the statement of sitting TDP MP J.C. Diwakar Reddy that he had distributed between ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 each to the voters. Addressing the media here, Mr. Jagadeesh said party State secretary K. Ramakrishna lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, drawing his attention to the statement of Mr. Diwakar Reddy that ₹50 crore was spent in the constituency in which his son Pavan Reddy was in the fray. Video clip Mr. Diwakar Reddy allegedly told the media in Amaravati that he was forced to spend huge amount as people demanded ₹2,000 per vote, the CPI leader said. Though a video clipping of the statement was submitted to the Election Commission, no action was taken against the TDP leader so far, he said. The MP’s statement was not taken into cognisance though, as per the Model Code of Conduct, those contesting for the Parliament should not spend more that ₹70 lakh each. “The ECI should file a case against Mr. Diwakar Reddy and his son, and conduct a repoll in the constituency,” the CPI leader demanded.
