Polling largely peaceful in Naidu’s home district

Marked by a neck and neck fight between the ruling Telugu Desam Party and the opposition YSR Congress Party in half a dozen Assembly constituencies, the election scenario remained largely peaceful in Chittoor district, the home turf of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Despite the scorching heat, the voting percentage stood at 72.40 in the district by 6 pm.
An assault on the YSR Congress Party candidate for Puthalapattu (SC) Assembly constituency, M.S. Babu, and death of an activist of YSR Congress Party, Venkatrama Reddy at Tamballapalle constituency, had eclipsed the otherwise peaceful ambience of the district.
According to information, the YSRCP candidate, M.S. Babu, visited a polling booth at Kalakada Kattakindapalle village. Suspecting manipulation by TDP workers, he reportedly damaged two EVMs. Angered by his act, the villagers, reportedly mostly sympathisers of the TDP, had lifted him away from the booth, took him to a nearby mango garden allegedly thrashed him and damaged his car. Mr.Babu’s supporters rescued him and got him admitted to the Government Hospital at Chittoor, where he is undergoing treatment in the ICU.
