Exposed: Finance Ministry prepared for cuts in the agriculture-related budget

  • The Modi government, which is making budget cuts in all the areas amid coronavirus, was also preparing to cut agriculture-related schemes.
  • The finance ministry had asked to cut development schemes like security mission, irrigation, organic farming. The ministry had said that these schemes do not have special benefits.
  • There were impacts of the Finance Minister as well. The Ministry of Agriculture also cut down on schemes providing remunerative prices or minimum support prices.
  • The Agriculture Ministry in its proposal sent to the Ministry of Economic Development demanded Rs 4,530 crore, but the Finance Ministry set 3712.44 crores.
  • The Centre was running a scheme for the sale of pulses under PSS, but the Finance Ministry believed that it was not needed.
