The official notification of Home Ministry said the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA came into effect on Friday.
The notification read, "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (47 of 2019), the Central Government hereby appoints the 10th day of January 2020, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force."
The CAA states that members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities from Pak, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India till 31st Dec will be given citizenship immediately.
People who oppose the act say that it is for the first time India will grant citizenship based on religion which violates the basic principles of the constitution.
While the govt claims that the religious minorities from the 3 countries have no other option but to come to India when they face religious persecution.
