After the fall of and the BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal, the new government led by Suvendu Adhikari moved quickly to scrap large portions of the OBC list and reduce reservation from 17% to 7%. The biggest impact fell on Muslim OBC communities, with 75 out of 77 removed communities belonging to backward Muslim groups. The government also withdrew the Supreme Court appeal against the Calcutta High Court verdict, effectively ending recognition for lakhs of OBC certificates issued after 2010. But this controversy is not just about reservation. It also raises questions about political intent, communal polarization, and selective governance. Suvendu Adhikari’s statements after the election victory, where he openly spoke about “Hindu votes” and labeled Muslims as “radical,” sparked outrage across the country. The episode also revisits old corruption allegations surrounding Suvendu Adhikari — from the Narada sting operation, where leaders were allegedly seen accepting cash on camera, to the Saradha chit fund scam, where his name surfaced in letters written by accused businessman Sudipta Sen. Despite investigations, summons, and allegations, no charges ultimately reached him after his switch from TMC to BJP — leading critics to once again question the BJP’s so-called “washing machine politics.” Is OBC reservation now becoming a political weapon? Is communal division replacing social justice? And are corruption allegations buried under the shield of power? Political Naari asks the questions that mainstream debates often avoid.
