Assam Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed has been arrested on sedition charges for making 'provocative' remarks during an anti-encroachment drive in Darrang district.
Ahmed was detained from his MLA residence in Dispur on Saturday and taken to Panbazar police station for questioning, where he was later arrested.
The police officer said that Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed can be produced in the court today.
He also said that a case has also been registered against him under section 124A (sedition) of IPC.
In fact, several organizations including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the BJP's Yuva Morcha BJYM had lodged police complaints against the MLA for his remarks.
