SC sentences for a fake encounter by UP Police, imposes a fine of 7 lakhs on the govt

  • The SC has imposed a fine of Rs 7 lakh on the UP govt for negligence and cover-up in the fake encounter case 19 years ago in UP.
  • In fact, there was an encounter in 2002 at Adha Tirahe in Secunderabad, where the police shot a student. At that time Mayawati was the CM of the state.
  • Nothing happened to the four accused policemen after this fake encounter, while on the other hand, the father of the deceased student wandered from door to door for justice.
  • When the matter went to the Supreme Court, the investigation went ahead and it was found that this encounter was fake, the court also raised questions about the working style of the police.
  • Justice Vineet Sharan said, "There was complete evidence of the fake encounter, yet the senior police officers kept saving the accused, it is not worthy of pardon."
