Supreme Court reprimands the states, saying – 'education of orphaned children should not be interrupted'
- Many children have been orphaned since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
- The Supreme Court has directed the state governments to ensure that their education in private schools at least during the current academic year, remains undisturbed.
- The court suggested that this could be done by asking the schools to waive the fees or by asking the state government to waive half the fees of such children.
- The court has directed the states to work closely with child welfare committees and district education officers and interact with private schools where these children are studying.
- In the last hearing, the Court had said that the benefits of all the welfare schemes run for orphans under the PM Cares Fund should also be given to those children who have lost their parents during Covid-19.
