Yogi govt withdraws 77 criminal cases related to Muzaffarnagar riots without assigning any reason
- The UP government has withdrawn 77 criminal cases related to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. The maximum punishment in these cases is life imprisonment.
- It was told in the Supreme Court that these cases have been withdrawn without assigning any reason.
- It is only stated that the administration has decided to withdraw the particular case after due consideration. In the case of early trial of criminal cases against MPs/MLAs, amicus curiae Vijay Hansaria has filed this report.
- Hansaria said that the 77 cases related to the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, which have been withdrawn under Section 321 of the CrPC, can be probed by the High Court.
- In fact, on August 10, 2021, the Supreme Court had directed that no case against any sitting or former MP-MLA shall be withdrawn without the permission of the High Court.
