SC on criminalization in elections: Make the candidate's criminal history public within 48 hours of political party selection
- Giving an important decision on criminalization in elections, the Supreme Court has ordered that political parties should inform the public about the criminal history of their candidates within 48 hours of selection.
- Also, the parties will have to publish the criminal history of the candidates selected for the election.
- SC (Supreme Court) modified its decision of February 13, 2020 in this regard.
- Indeed, in paragraph 4.4 of the February 2020 judgment, the SC had ordered that the criminal history of a candidate should be published within 48 hours of the selection or at least two weeks before the first date of filing of nominations.
- But now, it has said that it has modified para 4.4 of the said judgment and the selection will be published within 48 hours, besides the bench has also passed some additional directions.
