Massive dip in UPSC, SCC, Banking recruitments for govt jobs in last 5 years

  • The trend of picking fewer civil servants each year is continuing for 5 years. This came after UPSC advertised positions for its prestigious CSE.
  • UPSC advertised 712 positions for its CSE which was down from 796 last year means over a 10 % reduction.
  • This year, the total number of candidates recruited by the UPSC dropped from 6,103 in 2016-17 to 4,399 in 2019-2020. This is a dip of almost 30 %.
  • If we look at SSC, in 2016-17 it had recruited 68,880 candidates for the Centre. But, this number fell to 2,106 in 2020-21, i.e, 96 %.
  • In the banking sector, the IBPS promoted 1,167 vacancies for the posts of POs in 2020, which is less than 4,336 in 2019. There was a 67 % drop.
