More than 9,500 teaching posts in various higher education institutions are yet to be filled in the state.
6,500 posts are vacant in 301 government and government-aided arts and science colleges, colleges of education and state universities while 1,930 posts are still vacant in technical institutions.
Recently, the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) had issued notification to fill 2,340 posts of assistant professors in government arts and science colleges across the state.
 The higher education department has fixed a target of 60% gross enrolment ratio (GER) for the state. However, the state has already achieved 48.5% GER, which is increasing at 1.5%, against the national average of 25.8%.
The higher education department is of the view  to bring five TN universities on the list of top 100 varsities in the country within two years and among the top 1000 global universities within five years.
