Congress turns to Mahatma Gandhi to revive its fortunes

Going through an existential crisis, the Congress has turned to iconic Mahatma Gandhi to effect a reversal in its dipping fortunes. In an effort to reclaim Mahatma Gandhi whose legacy, Congress alleges, is being usurped by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other icons such as Sardar Patel, the party will oraganise week-long celebrations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma for a week from October 2-9.
On October 2, the party will organise 'Padayatras' throughout the country under its banner. Congress general secretaries and state and district chiefs have been asked to galvanise workers for the padyatra and other programmes in a big way. "It is decided that our party will organise the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi for a week from October 2 to 9," read an internal circular by AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal.

"On October 2, massive Padyatras shall be organised in all states, with workers wearing the Gandhi Topi, carrying photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and raising slogans, so that thoughts of Mahatma could be spread across the nation," the circular states. From October 3 to 9, various activities shall be taken up at the state and district level, Venugopal added. "During the week, lectures, seminars, and debates will be organised with the participation of subject experts on the values and ideas for which Gandhiji stood for," the party said.
