‘GU Student Council’ election: ABVP, BJYM in straight contest

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the student body of the Bharatiya Janata Party, will be in a straight contest for the election that will he held elect the Student Council of Goa University (GU) on August 26, Sankalp Phaldesai, representing the ABVP, while Khemal Prabhu Shirodkar of the BJYM, are the two contestants for the posts of the president of the Students Council.
All the dummy candidates from both the groups have withdrawn their nominations on August 23, the last date for doing so. The election will also elect general secretary, ladies representative and other members on the council. The particular election was rescheduled to August 26 after the ABVP and the BJYM supporters clashed on August 16, and allegedly attacked the Vice Chancellor Varun Sahani.
The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), on the other hand has threatened to disrupt this election, if the BJP member and the university professor, Ramrao Wagh is not moved out as the director of Students’ Welfare, and further, if open elections are not conducted.
Around 80 representatives of the university faculty will be able to cast their votes, however, the NSUI has demanded that all the 28,000 university-affiliated students should be allowed to vote.  The NSUI has already boycott the election. Meanwhile, ‘Together for University’ has strongly condemned the attack and hackling of the Vice Chancellor inside the Goa University’s administration office by politically motivated organisations on August 16.
