Chinchinim villagers ‘firm’ on ‘no’ to housing board project

Six months have gone by after the Chinchinim villagers unanimously opposed the proposed housing board project in their village. Neighbouring villages have also joined the bandwagon of opposing the project fearing its spillover effect. The government had directed the Revenue Department to identify a land for setting up a housing board project in Chinchinim, and it was strongly opposed not just by the villagers but also by the communidade in the village.
Deputy sarpanch Valentino Baretto informed that the panchayat has sent the particular gram sabha resolution to various government departments, including the Revenue Department, however, “we have not received any communication from the government.” Baretto said that “back then we had also given a copy of the resolution to Velim MLA Filip Neri Rodrigues. We will have to see what his stand is,” he added.
Subsequently, the then Congress MLA joined the BJP and has become a minister in the Pramod Sawant government. Meanwhile, villagers informed that under no circumstances they will allow the housing board project to come up in the village as it will result in the influx of migrants.  Now, that the MLA is a part of the government he should ensure that the proposal is withdrawn, they added. The villagers pointed out that Chinchinim is a peaceful village and any attempt to change the demography of the village just as it has happened in other parts of the state will be opposed.
