West Bengal: Villagers cut off bully with trench

Tired of being bullied by the unbridled son of a local leader, villagers of Balabhut area in Coochbehar found a novel way to put him in his place: They dug a deep trench around his house overnight, cutting him off from the rest of the population. The village is located near Tufanganj city, and tensions have been running high since.
Mafizul, the younger son of Ainul Haq, a panchayat leader from Trinamool Congress, stands accused of many instances of criminality, including raping a woman and injuring an 11-year-old child. All his nefarious activities are protected by his father's political influence.
When some villagers complained about his reign of terror, he allegedly beat up six members of a family, with four of them needing hospitalization — two are in a facility in Coochbehar and another two have been admitted to a hospital in Tufanganj city. Cases are registered against Mafizul in Tufanganj police station but no action has been taken.
With no faith in the justice system, the villagers took it upon themselves to socially boycott the family and dug the five-feet long trench to isolate them. Haq has denied knowledge of his son's criminal activities.
