House hails Centre for repealing Article 370

The Goa Legislative Assembly on Tuesday congratulated Narendra Modi-led Union government for repealing Article 370 and reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, amidst three opposition Congress legislators including Leader of Opposition, staging walk out from the House terming the move as “undemocratic”. However, former Chief Minister and senior Congress MLA Pratapsingh Rane extended their support to the Government in congratulating Prime Minister.
BJP MLA Dayanand Sopte moved the motion congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Central government for scrapping Article 370, stating it to be a historic movement for the country.
Passing the resolution, Speaker Rajesh Patnekar said the decision by union government has given rise to hopes that Baluchistan will be independent soon and Punjab and Sindh will be annexed to Indian Territory.
Talking on the resolution, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that he has personal experience as BJP Yuva morcha worker of how carrying tri colour was considered as a crime in Jammu and Kashmir in 2013.
Sawant, on the Floor of the House, narrated his personal experience in Jammu and Kashmir during ‘Tiranga Lehrao’ programme during which several BJP workers were arrested for “merely carrying a tri-colour.”
“What Prime Minister and Home Minister have done to give freedom to Jammu and Kashmir, is a historic move. BJP is a real secular party. Some people are trying to create fear. The situation in Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh was considered while taking this decision, the kind of terrorism was existing; this is required for up keeping sovereignty of the country,” he said.
Taking a dig at the Congress, the chief minister questioned the party for taking 14 years to liberate Goa after the Independence of India. “India got independence in 1947 but it took 14 years for then Congress government to liberate Goa. Congress has to answer this question,” he said.
BJP legislators hailed the Central government’s decision, stating that it is the day of complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. The legislators said the abrogated Article 370 is a fitting tribute to Jan Sangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who sacrificed his life protesting against the special status and autonomy to the State.
They said that Modi-led government has lived up to the expectations reposed by the Indian voters who have given us clear and strong mandate to transform this nation by resolving pending issues.
While Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho sparked controversy alleging that Mukherjee was killed for his protest in a jail in Srinagar, Minister for Ports, Michael Lobo said he would like to purchase a plot in Jammu and Kashmir and have his house there.
Senior Congress MLA Pratapsingh Rane was the only one from the opposition to support the motion. He said though he is in opposition he was supporting the motion for “unity and integrity of the country, for which he has taken oath.”
