Patil urges Yediyurappa to cancel Delhi trip

As five districts in north Karnataka are reeling under severe floods caused by the swelling Krishna, Congress leader and former Minister H.K. Patil (in picture) on Sunday urged the Chief Minister to cancel his Delhi visit. “Please cancel your trip to New Delhi and visit flood-affected north Karnataka instead,” Mr. Patil said in a letter to Mr. Yediyurappa.
In what is being seen in political circles as stepping up of pressure on the newly installed government, the Congress, while on the one hand, is taunting the BJP for not expanding the Cabinet though north Karnataka is witnessing floods, on the other, it is asking Mr. Yediyurappa to cancel his Delhi trip.
The Chief Minister’s Delhi visit is being seen within the BJP as a necessity to get clearance from the central unit for the list of Cabinet hopefuls.
In fact, it was only after Mr. Patil’s letter that the Chief Minister’s office announced that Mr. Yediyurappa would undertake an aerial survey of the flood-affected districts on Monday.
Earlier, asking Mr. Yediyurappa to convene a meeting of the State disaster management authority immediately and urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the affected areas in Bombay Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka, Mr. Patil pointed out at large-scale damage owing to release of water by Maharashtra into Krishna and other rivers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Yediyurappa refused to cancel his scheduled Delhi visit, and said he would utilise the opportunity to meet Union Ministers to seek funds for flood relief. In his reply to Mr. Patil’s letter, the Chief Minister said he would also meet MPs to seek their cooperation in getting more funds sanctioned for the State.
