Will take action against illegalities at jetties: Fisheries Minister

The legislators, from both the ruling as well as opposition alleged control of fish mafia over the functioning of Malim jetty, while demanding that the govt intervenes, in order to bring in discipline amongst the fish traders.  The MLAs charged that the local traditional fishermen are not allowed to park their trawlers and are also deprived of diesel facility, which is provided by the govt on subsidized rates.
The issue racked up during the Question Hour when BJP MLA Nilkant Halarnkar pointed out to the growing illegalities undertaken by the Mandovi Fisheries Cooperative Society, who control the Malim jetty. He said that the local fishermen are harassed by the society members and trawler operators, who are non-Goans and now have full control over the jetty.
He was rightly supported by BJP MLA Glen Ticlo, Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, NCP legislator Churchill Alemao and Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte. The MLAs voiced their concern over the ill-treatment meted out to the local traditional fishermen, who are harassed by the non society members and non-Goan trawler operators.
While Khaunte alleged illegalities into retail selling of fish, no diesel supply to local trawler operators, illegal encroachment; Lourenco demanded that govt takes over the rights of jetty and operate it under the fisheries dept. Alemao also demanded that the govt weeds out the monopoly culture, implemented by fishing associations at various jetties including Cutbona jetty.
Replying to the series of demands, Fisheries Minister Felipe Neri Rodrigues assured to investigate and take necessary measures including invoking action under Indian Penal Code (IPC) to bring in the necessary discipline at the jetties.  He added that he will visit the Malim jetty along with MLA Khaunte, Ticlo and Halarnkar to assess the situation.
