Ponda market opening before Ganesh: CM

Keeping his promise made on the floor of Assembly, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant inspected on Saturday the Ponda Market Complex, which is not in use since its inauguration in 2011. The chief minister was accompanied by Minister for Urban Development Milind Naik and Ponda MLA Ravi Naik and the officials of Directorate of Municipal Administration.
Due to the incomplete project, the Ponda Municipal Council has been losing the revenue since. After the inspection, Dr Sawant informed that the first phase of the project is ready and some shops are already auctioned to the vendors. The remaining shops would be auctioned and inaugurated before the Ganesh Chaturthi.
Further, the chief minister directed the officials of Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), Planning and Development Authority (PDA) and DMA to provide necessary NOCs and approval on urgent basis and to speed up the pending work of necessary facilities, maintenance etc so as to handover the project to PMC within one month’s time for it’s opening.
“After Panjim, Mapusa and Margao, the important city is Ponda and so the government wants it developed. For strengthening of the local bodies, it should focus on getting more revenue from development projects,” he added.
He said, “The second phase of construction of the project costing around Rs 1.5 crore will begin in October.” Dr Sawant also inspected the Golden Jubilee Project, of which work is pending due to shortage of funds, and directed the PMC not to wait for the funds but to complete the project work using the Rs 3 crore allotted to it under Fourteenth Finance Commission.
