he State of Gujarat is leading the development of a natural gas-based economy in India by calling for applications to establish 300 new compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling stations, reports NGV Global News. The scheme for new CNG stations will work on a franchisee or dealer ownership basis, according to the Government of Gujarat.
The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) has estimated that Gujarat’s CNG network has expanded in the last 25 years to 552 sites - 31% of the 1,769 CNG stations in India. 
Several government initiatives are supporting the transition to natural gas as a cleaner fuel to address current limitations of supply while encouraging increased uptake. The Government of India hopes to count with over 8,000 CNG stations by 2029. In addition, National Biofuel Policy 2018 & SATAT program has targeted 5,000 new CBG (Bio-CNG) or RNG plants to have the capacity to implement around 3,000 renewable natural gas (RNG) filling stations in the next ten years.
After implementation, India’s refuelling infrastructure is expected to reach almost 13,000 sites, which could supply natural gas to 70% of the total population.
