HIV test may soon be compulsory for marriage

The state government is contemplating enactment of a legislation, which will make HIV test compulsory for marriage registration in the state.
Coming out with this information, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told ‘The Navhind Times’ that he is presently examining the modalities and legalities for enacting such a law.
“If the law department gives green signal for this proposal then the government will table a related Bill during the forthcoming monsoon session of the state legislative assembly,” he added.
Speaking further, the Health Minister said that Goa is fast becoming a progressive state and if such a legislation comes into existence then it would aptly reflect the progressive vision of the Goa government.
Rane said that children born to parents suffering from thalassemia also contract the illness and do not survive for long. “The proposed legislation will also prove helpful in avoiding such cases and is definitely in the public interest,” he noted. The Health Minister further informed that the government is also proposing to give additional powers to the state registrar. Incidentally, when in the past, the government had tried to bring in such a Bill, it had met with severe criticism from various sections, including Catholic church, which said the testing should be voluntary and not compulsory.
