The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has threatened to stop Calangute and Saligao sewage tankers from entering the sewage treatment plant at Tonca in the city from Wednesday onwards if Panaji and Taleigao’s wet garbage is not treated at the Saligao waste management facility.
Addressing the media on Monday, city Mayor Uday Madkaikar said that since the last two days, the Saligao waste management facility has stopped treating the wet garbage generated in the city by stating that people from Saligao and Calangute are opposing it.
Madkaikar said that sewage from nearly 100 tankers from Calangute and Saligao is being treated at the Tonca sewage treatment plant and as such roads and retaining walls have been damaged. “But we were silently bearing it since the (Saligao) plant had been treating our wet garbage,” he said.
Stating that this is a serious matter, Madkaikar sought Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s intervention to resolve the issue as soon as possible and also sought cooperation from the people of Calangute. He said the CCP is generating around 28 tonne of wet garbage and 18 tonne is being treated at three different units in the city – near LIC, near Heera petrol pump and in the municipal market, while only ten tonne of waste is being treated at the Saligao waste treatment facility.
The CCP has been facing inconvenience since the last two days, as the
Saligao solid waste management facility has stopped its trucks carrying the waste claiming that the residents do not want the plant to treat Panaji garbage.
