Cloudburst triggers alert in Sikkim

Towns and villages adjacent to Teesta river in Sikkim have been put on high alert after a cloudburst was reported in the upstream of Chungthang in North Sikkim. Heavy inflow with muddy water and logs were seen at the NHPC Teesta Stage 5 dam in Dikchu after which people living in Singtam and Rangpo towns in East Sikkim district have been alerted through beat police.

The general public has been cautioned not to venture near the river and to be at safer places. As per Chungthang sub division official, there is no casualty and damaged reported from Lachen yet, but the flow of water is very high in Lachen river. People of Lachen and Chungthang are alerted about the situation. 

Chief minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has also expressed his concern on the stranded tourists in North Sikkim. He has directed the State authorities and other agencies involved to clear the road as soon as possible so that the stranded tourists reach their respective destinations. He has also directed the authorities to extend all possible help to the tourists and the general public who are suffering out of the unprecedented calamity and road blockage due to torrential rain.
