This development comes minutes after the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and chief minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan announced that they would be giving the ceremony a miss.
Politicizing the ceremony, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee stated that she is compelled to not attend the ceremony, accusing the PM Modi government of the West Bengal situation.
She said that owing to media reports which say that the BJP has claimed that 54 people were murdered in West Bengal in poll violence and calling them as falsehoods, she has decided to not attend the ceremony.
She has said that ceremony "is an august occasion to celebrate democracy, not one that should be devalued by any political party."
