Kamal not to contest election this time

Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan said on Sunday that he would contest neither in the Lok Sabha election nor in the byelection to 18 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu.
Releasing his party’s manifesto and final list of candidates at a public meeting in Coimbatore, Mr. Haasan contended that he was opting out of the race as “I prefer to carry the palanquin of the candidates rather than sit on it. This also helps me tour the State to campaign.”
In his manifesto, he promised that the party would strive for home delivery of ration goods - a promise that was originally made by fellow actor-politician Vijayakant in 2006. The manifesto promised to provide drinking water for all households, equal wages for women, and steps to appoint Governor “by elected representatives of the States”.
