To give a boost to the medical devices industry, which is a sunrise sector, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu has announced the setting up of a National Medical Devices Promotion Council under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Speaking at the 4th WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices at the Andhra Pradesh Medtech Zone here on Friday, Mr. Prabhu said the medical devices Industry (MDI) would play a key role in the healthcare ecosystem. Describing the industry as futuristic, he said there was scope for all sorts of innovations in it. Appreciating the State government for setting up the park with state-of-the-art labs and other facilities on a single campus, Mr. Suresh Prabhu said more such parks should come up in the country.
He also promised to extend all support to the State government and the A.P. Medtech Zone. The proposed national council, headed by the Secretary, DIPP, would achieve convergence as medical devices were covered under various Ministries and departments, he pointed out. This would give a boost to domestic manufacturing and tap the export potential. The Union Minister urged the MSME sector and start-ups to play a key role in the development of the MDI.
