Creative governance can bring about transformation: Kiran Bedi

Governance should transform society, opined Kiran Bedi, the country’s first female IPS officer who is currently the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. She was delivering the first lecture on the occasion of the birth centenary of former IPS officer, Prof. S. Venugopal Rao.
Addressing a packed gathering, Ms Bedi said, “Office is management. But the field is creative. In the field, there is a chance to learn, appreciate and reward.” Every public servant in India should do creative work, she stressed while delivering the lecture on ‘Creative governance’, adding only creative governance can bring about transformation.
Illustrating what creative governance means, Ms Bedi said when she was in charge of traffic control in New Delhi in 1982, she managed to get private crane operators to tow away vehicles which violated parking rules. “The police department did not have a budget for cranes. But I managed to get cranes for no cost as the crane operators charged the defaulters directly,” she explained, adding officers should quickly generate solutions to problems at hand. “We even booked the Prime Minister’s car,” she added, as the crowd cheered.
