Assam NRC: SC Again Defers Process of Receiving Claims And Objections Till Further Orders

The Supreme Court on Wednesday again deferred the process of receiving claims and objections to the final draft of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) until further orders. The final draft of Assam’s NRC was published on July 30 in which names of 2.89 crore of the 3.29 crore people in the state were included. The names of 40,70,707 people do not figure in the list. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold.
The process for making claims and objections by those left out from the draft NRC was set to begin on August 30 and continue till September 28. However, the Supreme Court deferred the receipt of claims and objections to Assam’s final draft of the NRC from the earlier scheduled August 30.
