NDA to Build Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Samadhi Near Rajghat: Report
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would construct a separate samadhi-cum-memorial dedicated to nation’s first BJP prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on the banks of Yamuna near Rajghat in New Delhi, said media reports on Friday. A leading portal said that to do so, the Centre would have to do away with a law passed by its predecessor, the UPA government.
In 2013, the UPA government had passed a law calling for a ‘Rashtriya Samiti’ or a common memorial for all former prime ministers of India who did not have memorials in their names. For calling for a common samadhi for all deceased leaders, the UPA had cited the paucity of land as the reason, said the report. So for the Vajpayee memorial to be built in New Delhi, the UPA law will have to be overturned, it said. Sources said the decision is likely to be taken at the next Cabinet meeting.
