Prez gives nod to CAB, Will Citizenship Amendment Act influence voters in Assam & West Bengal?

  • The bill has come at a time when the Bharatiya Janta Party has begun preparations for 2021 West Bengal and Assam assembly elections. The BJP is hoping to wrest power in West Bengal and a second term in Assam.

  • West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has vehemently opposed this Citizenship Amendment bill. Mamata Banerjee has even declared that her government will not let the implementation of this bill in West Bengal.

  • However, this is seen as an about-turn by the CM, as earlier, she had led a forceful campaign against the Left Front government of West Bengal accusing it of not addressing the issue of illegal migration from Bangladesh for vote-bank politics.

  • The Citizenship Amendment bill will be the top electoral issue in in 2021 West Bengal and Assam assembly elections. BJP knows it very well that the party’s share of Muslim votes is marginal in both these sates.

  • Muslims constitute around 27-30 per cent of the population of Bengal. In Assam, the share of Muslims in the state's population is around 35 per cent. As such, the consolidation of HIndu voters will surely help BJP in the upcoming elections in both these states.
