CAB protests in Northeast: Tripura remains tense but peaceful

  • The Northeast state of Tripura remained tense but peaceful on Wednesday, as widespread protests spread to tribal areas. But by late evening as Rajya Sabha passed the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), Tripura got some respite as the protesting bodies called off the strike.
  • Announcing the decision, Antony Debbarma, the convenor of the Joint Movement against Citizenship Amendment Bill (JMACAB), said that the strike has been withdrawn after the assurance that they will get a hearing with Home minister Amit Shah.
  • Addressing media, after his meet with CM Biplab Deb, Anthony said, "We are not just asking for exemption of Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas from the CAB but entire Tripura. We will take further decisions based on that."
  • A protestor told India Today TV, "We don't want citizenship given to Bangladeshi Muslims or Hindus. Several Bengali Hindus are actually Bangladeshi.
  • And as per 2011 census, their population is 70 percent while indigenous tribals are now only limited to 30 per cent."
