Gujarat Govt slashes new traffic violation fines by 90% in the wake of widespread protests

Gujarat Government takes step to reduce the penalities by 25% to 90% on“compassionate and humanitarian” grounds after the amended Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) came into force.
The new fines will come into force in Gujarat from September 16.
As per the new MVA law, states cannot change penalties for many offences, including juvenile driving, drunk driving and jumping traffic light.
However, the Gujarat Government went ahead and reduced fines to Rs. 500 from Rs.1000 for not wearing helmets and from Rs 1,000 to Rs 100 for triple-riding. Similarly, the state has reduced heavy fine of Rs.10,000 to Rs. 1,000 for obstructing a fire vehicle or ambulance.
The reduction in fines by the Gujarat Government is being considered as an act to reduce the anger of the people in the state who were protesting against the hefty penalties, especially in Rupani's home turf, Rajkot.
