Seventy three year-old resident doctor Deven Dutta was attacked by workers of a tea estate in Assam’s Jorhat district on August 31 and later succumbed to his injuries at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.
Reports said, the doctor Dutta was said to be beaten up for allegedly being absent from duty and blaming him for the death of a casual worker of Teok Tea Estate which is located under Teok Revenue circle and falls under Teok police station, about 22 kms away from Jorhat town in Assam.
Prior to candle light vigil in the evening, a floral tribute ceremony was also organized at the photograph of the departed soul of doctor Dutta at the IMA Manipur premises at Lamphelpat in Imphal.
Endorsing the declaration of IMA headquarters as a day of solidarity and silent mourning on September 3, members of IMA (Manipur) and all doctors’ fraternity wore black badges and observed solemn mourning in the morning.
The president of IMA (Manipur) Dr Shyamkumar Laishram, former IMA (Manipur) president Dr Kh Palin, former medical superintendent of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Dr Y Mohen, Dr Rajendra Singh Sinam of Urology department (RIMS), vice president Dr S Jugindro of IMA (Manipur), functionaries of IMA (Manipur) including the former executive members were present during the day’s observation.
According to a press release issued by secretary Dr Nelson Loitongbam of IMA (Manipur), the nation as a whole should reflect on the import of the incident which is nothing but savage barbarism.
“The medical profession of the country is at loss of words to countenance the sheer savageness unleashed on it,” it said.
Stating that the entire medical fraternity stands united with the Assam State Branch at this hour of imminence crisis, the release said,
“IMA, Manipur State Branch along with IMA, Headquarters and the medical fraternity of the nation stand hand in hand with our Assam brethren,” the release further added.
