Kin of flood victims in Karnataka asked to pay Rs 8,000 for funeral

Even as Karnataka reeling under heavy rain and flood condition, family of two landslide victims – Mamata and Nikita – found it hard to cremate their bodies. The crematorium members allegedly demanded Rs 8,000 from their parents, and a video of the mother weeping about the insensitive act went viral on the social media.
The crematorium is located in the flood-ravaged Kodagu district. The video shows the woman saying that they had lost everything, including property and their two daughters in the landslip. She asked how they could pay Rs 8,000. She said that they were not allowed to enter the crematorium and had broke open the gate to enter.
Mysore-Kodagu BJP MP Pratap Simha and Virajpet BJP MLA K G Bopaiah were urged to act on the incident. Following this, Simha tweeted, “This video has gone viral. However, the last rites were performed at 3 pm. This morning, a cheque for Rs 10 lakh has been given to the family of Mamata and Nikita. No one had brought the matter of demanding money to the notice. After learning about it, an FIR was registered.”
