The fifth National Handloom Day was celebrated in Agartala’s Pragnya Bhavan of Tripura on Wednesday. It was organized by Weaver’s Service Centre, Agartala.  Deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Barman was the chief guest at the programme. Attending the programme, he appreciated the various handloom products of the local artisans displayed.
Dev Barman viewed that handloom is just not the products of the weavers from various communities. He said it is also part of the cultural history of the State. He also called for its preservation. During the programme weavers and handloom artisans of the state were felicitated. These include those who went through the 45 days of skill up-gradation training.
The training was held on weaving, designing and dying. Certificates were distributed among them. The weavers expressed that the training was helping them to get better income. They also said they were taught market-oriented latest designs. They were also skilled and taught the knowledge of marketing. They are also provided with necessary equipment totally free by the centre.
In Tripura, more than 1.4 lakh families are engaged with handloom. It is one of the major employment providers in the State.
